Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer, the preview of the Outlander hybrid coming soon

Mitsubishi has brought the Engelberg Tourer to the Geneva Motor Show, a SUV prototype that gives us a preview of the evolution of PHEV technology coming to the brand

In the Swiss town of Engelberg lies one of the country’s most famous ski resorts, since its cable cars located right within the town offer incredible views, in addition to being a paradise for those who prefer off-piste skiing. The name of this spectacular place is what Mitsubishi has chosen for its new SUV prototype presented at the Geneva Motor Show, the Engelberg Tourer.

The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with all-wheel drive, allowing its driver to enjoy driving over any type of terrain and in any weather conditions. In short, it is versatile enough to be used on any kind of adventure, supported also by the range that the hybrid system provides. Keep it in mind, as the new generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander, which already offers a PHEV version, will have much to do with the new Engelberg Tourer prototype.

The styling of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer presents a prototype with strong, highly pronounced lines and a commanding presence on the road, which invites us to leave the tarmac and head onto dirt tracks, where it would undoubtedly move like a fish in water. Inside we would find quality materials and finishes, the latest technology systems and, in addition, all the comfort that SUVs usually provide to their occupants.

But what we should really pay attention to are the technological novelties the Engelberg Tourer presents, since these are the ones that should be applied to the Mitsubishi Outlander. The Engelberg Tourer is based on the plug-in hybrid system of the Outlander PHEV, so it uses the 2,400 cc Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, developed specifically for this hybrid model, while the hybrid system battery is located under the floor in the middle of the vehicle.

Mitsubishi states that the Engelberg Tourer uses a larger battery, although it does not reveal its new capacity, so we will have to take the 13.8 kWh of the Outlander PHEV as a reference. Thanks to this new battery, it has a range of 70 kilometres in fully electric mode, which translates into an increase of around 15 kilometres over the Outlander PHEV, while the total range of the package with a full tank reaches up to 700 km according to the WLTP cycle. In addition, the petrol engine can also act, when necessary, as a generator to charge the battery, thus maintaining an adequate charge level at all times.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi has also taken the opportunity to present its Dendo Drive House home system, which includes solar panels, a bidirectional charger and a domestic battery. By installing this system at home we can charge our vehicle electric or plug-in hybrid using solar energy, but we can also use our vehicle to supply electricity to the home itself, which undoubtedly translates into savings for our pockets.
