More than 30,000 drivers fined for speeding in the DGT speed control campaign

The speed control campaign carried out from 17 to 23 April resulted in more than 30,000 fines, with four arrests for reckless driving

Road safety remains an outstanding issue for the DGT, but also for many drivers in our country. We know there are checkpoints with radars that seem to be there just to raise revenue, but most of them check that drivers do not exceed the established maximum speed and thereby increase safety on our roads. In the latest DGT speed control campaign, 31,086 drivers were fined for exceeding the maximum speed, a very high figure that shows signage alone is not enough to make drivers aware of the risk.

The campaign was in operation from Monday 17 to Thursday 23 April, a few days when much of Spain was travelling one way or another, so a considerable number of checks were carried out. Radars were placed on motorways and dual carriageways, but also on conventional roads. Interestingly, it is on these roads, where people do not usually speed as much, that the largest number of offenders was recorded.

On secondary roads, 5.6% of vehicles were affected by these fines, while on motorways and dual carriageways 4.9% of the vehicles checked on these roads were fined. In total figures, 230,934 vehicles were checked on fast roads, with 11,363 fined, while on secondary roads 350,360 were checked, with 19,723 fined.

The most serious cases were four drivers who exceeded the speed limit of the road by 80 km/h. They have been referred to the courts, since this constitutes an offence against road safety. This behaviour is very dangerous, because it endangers not only the occupants of their own vehicle, but also may pose a problem for other drivers, who could be involved in an accident through no fault of their own. And at those speeds, the outcome is rarely pleasant.

These campaigns are carried out during the busiest periods on the roads to improve safety, so the best advice is to respect the maximum speed set for each stretch of road, to avoid not only accidents but also an unexpected fine, which nobody likes having to pay for exceeding the limit by a few kilometres.
