New Opel Karl: the brand's next bet for the A-segment

The new generation of the Opel Corsa will not be the only production model the German brand presents in October at the Paris Motor Show. The city car built in Zaragoza will be joined by the indirect successor to the Agila. It will be called Opel Karl and will share its platform with the new Chevrolet Spark, a model that will not be available in Europe because, as you know, GM decided that Chevrolet will leave this continent in 2016.
The Karl, which was the name of one of Adam Opel‘s three sons, will become the most affordable vehicle in the range and will constitute the first step of the strategy we discussed a couple of months ago. Opel will take over from Chevrolet in attracting customers who prefer products with more reasonable prices, and the Karl will allow it to begin building an offering with which to compete against Dacia, whose success has intrigued Opel’s CEO, Karl-Thomas Neumann.
Like the Agila and the Spark, the Karl will be a small city car with five doors and five seats in its cabin. It measures 3.68 metres in length, making it almost two centimetres shorter than the ADAM and six centimetres shorter than the latest generation of the Agila. Its commercial launch is scheduled for summer 2015.
The only image published so far reveals the same side styling line seen on the most recent Opel models since the Insignia, headlights that extend from the nose towards the A-pillars, and a fairly vertical rear end with tail lights resembling those of the Mokka. The remaining details will be confirmed when it is presented in Paris.
