New Peugeot 2008: much more of an SUV, and now with an electric version

Peugeot presents the new Peugeot 2008, which grows in size and advances in design and technology to bring it closer to its bigger sibling, the 3008.

Peugeot presents the new Peugeot 2008 2020, which will succeed its successful SUV launched on the market in 2013, which has been updated over time to remain at the top of the small SUV sales charts. Its rivals so far have included the Seat Arona, the Renault Captur and the Hyundai Kona and Kia Stonic, among others.

Although the new 2008, which will reach the market at the end of 2019, will not exactly be “small”. In fact, one of its hallmarks, apart from a very aggressive and striking design that strongly recalls the front of the new Peugeot 208, and the rear of the 3008, is its increase in size. The striking red, blue and orange colours, as well as wheels of up to 18 inches, also help here.

It is almost 16 centimetres longer, reaching 4.3 metres in length. The wheelbase provided by the new modular platform is 2.60 metres, also a notable increase.

The increase in size will allow the new Peugeot 2008 to distance itself from its most direct rivals, so that, depending on the version, it could even be an alternative to compact SUVs in the higher segment. Is Peugeot making room for a future SUV below the 2008?

For now, here is the car, with an imposing presence, more interior space, plenty of technology on board… and a boot that grows to 434 litres according to the measurement standard, where the current 2008 stands at around 340. A substantial improvement.

Driver’s position of the Peugeot 2008: faithful to the i-cockpit

The i-cockpit driving position, with its unusually small steering wheel and instrumentation placed above it, is already a hallmark of Peugeot, and it could not be missing from this new 2008.

The dashboard design follows the layout we have seen in some of the brand’s recent models, such as the Peugeot 508. A touchscreen that can be up to 10 inches, positioned floating and raised for better access and visibility, does not eliminate a series of buttons below the air vents for operating the main functions. Something we find to be a real success.

As is the interior presentation. Peugeot promises many storage spaces, as well as improved interior habitability and the use of padded, pleasant-to-the-touch materials. The door panels use inserts with a carbon-look finish, and the dashboard may include decorative details in orange or blue depending on the trim.

The new 2008 also gets the 3D digital instrumentation we have already seen in the new 208, which projects the images as if they were a hologram.

Connectivity is ensured with compatibility for MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, a wireless charging system for mobile phones is offered, and up to 4 USB sockets, two in the front seats and two in the rear. Among the online services is TomTom Traffic, with real-time traffic information and the ability to automatically recalculate the route.

The most advanced sound system will be the one fitted to the 3008, 5008 and 508: signed by FOCAL, it features a 12-channel amplifier and 515 W of power.

The new Peugeot 2008 engine range

Peugeot offers six options for its new 2008: three petrol engines, two diesels… and an electric version, the Peugeot e-2008.

The petrol engines all come from the PureTech family, already known from other models in the range and the group, with 100, 130 and 155 CV. The most powerful is exclusively paired with the 8-speed automatic gearbox, which is optional for the 130 CV version. All are 3-cylinder 1.2-litre units, and include a particulate filter.

The diesel offer includes two options, with two variants of the 1.5 BlueHDI: with 100 CV and a 6-speed manual gearbox, or with 130 CV and an 8-speed automatic. Both comply with the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard.

There will be no four-wheel-drive versions, but the Grip Control is optionally available, an advanced traction control system that improves grip on slippery surfaces, combined with hill descent control to help off-road driving.

The Peugeot e-2008

The sixth option in the new 2008’s mechanical range is a fully electric version, the Peugeot e-2008, which uses the same propulsion system presented in the Peugeot e-208.

The 100 kW (136 CV) motor with 260 Nm of torque is paired with a 50 kWh battery, which in the case of the e-2008 allows a WLTP cycle range of 310 km, 30 km less than the supermini. As with the 208, the battery is guaranteed to retain 70% of its capacity for 8 years or 160,000 km.

Peugeot quotes 16 hours to complete a full battery charge from a conventional domestic socket using the standard charging cable, and between 5 hours 15 minutes and 8 hours using a Wallbox, depending on whether the installation is three-phase 11 kW or single-phase 7.4 kW. It supports fast charging of up to 100 kW, allowing 80% of the battery capacity to be recharged in around 30 minutes.

Outwardly, the electric version of the new 2008 is distinguished by specific “e” logos, a grille in body colour, exclusive grey Alcantara upholstery, and instrumentation exclusive to this electric version.

Four trim levels

Peugeot will offer four trim levels for the new 2008, following the same strategy as the current model: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. The last two feature distinctive elements, such as full LED headlights and 18-inch wheels with a diamond-cut finish. They also differ inside through various details, such as sports seats, aluminium pedals, a black roof, configurable ambient lighting and contrasting stitching on the upholstery.

Among the driver assistance features, in addition to the usual ones, the Drive Assist system stands out, combining active lane keeping assistance with adaptive cruise control to offer semi-autonomous driving.

The new Peugeot 2008 will be built at the Vigo plant for Europe, while for the Chinese market it will come from the Wuhan factory.
