New Toyota AYGO: the city dweller gets an update

The Toyota AYGO, Japan’s bet in the A-segment, updates its look with new colours and dynamic improvements. The city car from Toyota makes its debut in Geneva.

The current generation of the Toyota AYGO, launched in 2014, made a striking impression with its bold design. A youthful, customisable look with which the Japanese manufacturer aimed to gain momentum in the A-segment. And it succeeded. By 2017 sales had reached 85,000 units, and the AYGO held a 6.6% share of the A-segment in Europe. Now, with the model well established among city cars, the AYGO takes a step forward.

Full personalisation

The new Toyota AYGO keeps its youthful identity. It retains its original front X as a distinctive feature and adds improvements to appeal to urban buyers who look at design beyond the practicality of a small and inexpensive car.

All the front elements of the AYGO, grille, headlights and fenders, work together to form the front ‘X’. The modules under the headlights can be chosen in black, gloss black or silver to increase the car’s personalisation. It also debuts two new colours in the range, magenta and blue.

To personalise the look of the Toyota AYGO, you start by choosing one of the three available trims, X basic, X-play or X-clusiv, and then customise almost every element of the car. From the lowest to the highest equipment level, each trim has exclusive design features both outside and inside. But you will have to wait for the Geneva Motor Show to see the interior of the new AYGO and the new upholstery that Toyota has announced.

Dynamic improvements

Being a city car should not mean giving up dynamic driving. That is how Toyota sees it, which is why it announces chassis improvements and a revised three-cylinder engine for the AYGO to improve performance. A better delivery of torque at low revs is promised, and a new dual fuel injector system is included to refine the powertrain’s operation.

Thus, the 998 cc, 3-cylinder, 12-valve VVT-i DOHC engine of the Toyota AYGO produces 72 CV at 6,000 rpm and delivers 93 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. Its homologated top speed is 160 km/h, and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.8 seconds.

As for its environmental credentials, the Toyota AYGO announces consumption of 3.9 l/km and emissions of 90 g/km of CO2. In some markets it will offer an even cleaner ECO version that adds longer fourth and fifth gears, low rolling-resistance tyres, the Stop & Start system from Toyota and other aerodynamic improvements. It all adds up to one of the city cars with the lowest consumption.
