New Volkswagen T-Roc Cabrio, the successor to the New Beetle and the Golf Cabrio

The Volkswagen T-Roc Cabrio is now a reality, just as the brand hinted some time ago, and it arrives to replace the Golf Cabrio and the New Beetle.

A promise is a promise, and that is why Volkswagen has kept its word by announcing to the world the arrival of its new convertible, the T-Roc Cabrio. First came the Golf, then the New Beetle, and then the Eos, but the Wolfsburg engineers have decided to play their cards again and use a new formula to improve the recipe. Today the SUV segment is at the peak of its success, which is why Volkswagen has decided to go further with its best-seller by offering the possibility of removing the roof, but will it work?

We have already seen other brands try to win over the public with this cocktail, but Volkswagen claims that the T-Roc Cabrio arrives to break with all those stigmas and once again hit the high note in the market. To do so, the brand’s designers have managed to combine everything good about an SUV with everything good about a convertible, a formula that, at first glance, doesn’t sound bad at all.

A familiar yet distinct look

Since this is a variant of an existing model rather than a completely new vehicle, the similarities with the conventional T-Roc are easy to spot. In fact, both the front and rear keep their appearance intact, allowing the Cabrio version to retain those youthful and carefree traits which are emphasized even more by the ability to stow the roof.

The main difference lies in the roof, which now uses a fabric soft top, as tradition dictates, capable of folding away in 9 seconds as long as we are stationary or not driving faster than 30 km/h. Furthermore, we can notice how Volkswagen has removed two of the four doors.

But this is where the advantages of SUVs we mentioned earlier come into play. The T-Roc Cabrio still offers the typical dimensions of the segment it belongs to, which is why we will enjoy not only good visibility but also more than adequate rear-seat space, where there are now only two seats. Moreover, despite the convertible status of this SUV, its boot offers 284 litres of capacity.

Two engines and two trim levels

It is too early to talk about prices, but Volkswagen has wanted to give us a preview of the hearts that will bring the new T-Roc Cabrio to life. For now, no diesel engine will take on this task, as the engines powering the German SUV will be the 1.0 TSI with 115 CV and the 1.5 TSI with 150 CV, the latter being the only one available with an optional seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

To complete the package, Volkswagen will allow customers to choose between two trim levels: Style or R-Line. While the first focuses on design and personalization, the second brings out a much sportier side. This is reflected not only in the styling but also in certain components such as the sport chassis, which allows the response of the whole vehicle to be tuned.

As mentioned, it is risky to talk about the price of this new Volkswagen T-Roc Cabrio, but we know its world debut will take place at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. Once the event is over, Volkswagen will fire up the presses to create its new offspring, which is expected to reach the market in spring 2020.
