Nissan plans to launch an urban electric vehicle based on the Renault Twingo in 2027
Its name is expected to be Nissan Wave; it will share technology with the Renault Twingo and will reach the market a few months after the French manufacturer’s urban electric model.
We all know the good relationship that exists between Nissan and Renault as a result of their strategic alliance. The collaboration between the two companies will allow the Japanese manufacturer to launch the new Micra on the market, based on the new Renault 5 electric, but that is not all. We now know that Nissan plans to launch an even more affordable urban electric vehicle in 2027, which will be based precisely on the new electric Renault Twingo.
Some reports referring to this news also point to what could be the name chosen by Nissan for this new electric model. Although some rumours suggested it could be called Pixo, it now seems the Japanese manufacturer has chosen the name Wave. A completely new designation that Nissan had previously used only to refer to a trim level of the Micra.

The alliance between Renault and Nissan, consolidated over the years, allows both brands to share technology and resources to develop electric vehicles efficiently. Another example is the technical relationship between the Nissan Ariya and the Renault Scenic E-Tech, both based on the AmpR Medium platform. In this case, however, their production remains separate: Renault manufactures in France, while Nissan does so in Japan.
In the case of the Renault R5 E-Tech Electric and the Nissan Micra, which we have already mentioned, the collaboration is even closer, as both models, similar in technology but differentiated in design and equipment, are produced on the same assembly line at the Douai plant, in northern France.
The year of affordable urban electric vehicles
In 2026, the alliance will focus on the even more affordable and smaller urban vehicle segment. Renault will relaunch the Twingo, inspired by the iconic design of the nineties, with round headlights and a starting price below 20,000 euros. Meanwhile, Nissan will launch its own version of the Twingo, the Wave, which will share technology and be manufactured at the Renault plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. It should be noted, however, that while the Twingo will debut in spring 2026, the Wave will arrive somewhat later, in early 2027.

To reduce costs, Renault has also forged a collaboration with the Chinese manufacturer Geely in developing the new Twingo. This model will use the AmpR Small platform and a 63 kW motor from the Chinese manufacturer. The battery pack, supplied by CATL, will have a capacity of around 30 kWh, allowing it to cover approximately 300 km on a single charge.
