Peugeot returns to the world of GTIs with the 308 GTI

Peugeot has decided to bring back the GTI and has done so with a new version of the 308, called 308 GTI, which will be sold only in its 5-door variant. As in the past, the 308 GTI has its own section of exclusive details, and it also features a completely new engine from the PSA group, the same one found in the RCZ, but with some minor changes.
Although this 308 doesn’t stand out too much from what a non-GTI 308 would look like, it is wrapped in aesthetic modifications and the novel (for the 308) use of carbon fibre for the central part of the front bumper, although it must also be said that this detail will only come with the models sold in France. Inside, the pedals, footrest and gear lever are made of aluminium. And on the exterior, a rear spoiler has been fitted to the upper part of the boot lid, while it carries the obligatory GTI logos on the tailgate and on the sides of the bodywork, finishing off with a chrome twin exhaust.
Let’s get to the engine, where we find the RCZ’s powerplant, the 1.6, with direct injection and variable valve timing on the intake. And this is precisely the main difference from the RCZ’s engine, since in the GTI it only acts on the intake valves, but not on the exhaust valves, as happens in the RCZ. It will also share the Twin-Scroll turbo with the RCZ, although with a different boost pressure.
The performance and consumption figures announced by Peugeot are as follows: it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and has an official combined consumption of 6.9 l/100 km. We hope to get hold of a 308 GTI soon so we can tell you our impressions of the car and whether it deserves the GTI title.
