Last March, Caterham and Renault broke off their collaboration agreement for the joint development of a sports car, for reasons that affected both manufacturers. For both the British and the French company, this has meant a delay in the launch of both versions of the vehicle, which, in the case of the one that Alpine will sell, will come out in 2016 according to the most optimistic forecasts.

Despite these setbacks, Renault still has high hopes for the new Alpine. At the Moscow Motor Show, the head of design of the French brand, Laurens van den Acker, told the British magazine Autocar that they do not rule out the possibility of expanding the range of Alpine if its new sports car receives a good reception from the public.

The primary goal is for this road-going model not to become an economic disaster for Renault and, if that is avoided, they could consider designing more products for the brand that was revived in 2012. Regarding the sports car, van den Acker commented that its design is at a very advanced stage of development. “Carlos Ghosn has already seen the car and he liked it,” van den Acker stated.

The head of the Renault Sport division, Patrice Ratti, added that the sports car will stand out more for its handling than for its power, and that its appearance will bear no resemblance at all to the A110-50 prototype presented in 2012. According to Autocar, the first test mules are about to hit the roads, so we will soon see spy photos of the Alpine.
