Rivian announces a four-electric-motor version of its R1T pickup and R1S SUV

With the Quad versions, Rivian not only redefines performance in electric vehicles of this category, but also combines advanced technology with functional, elegant design, marking a turning point in the electric pickup and SUV market.

Rivian has just unveiled the long-awaited production versions of its R1S Quad and R1T Quad models, two electric vehicles that stand out for their exceptional power and performance in the electric SUV and pickup segment. Until the announcement of the upcoming launch of these new versions in summer 2024, Rivian did not offer versions with four electric motors for its R1T and R1S models. Both models, launched in 2021, were previously available in configurations with two or three electric motors, depending on the chosen version.

The main appeal of these Quad versions of both models lies in the integration of four electric motors, one for each wheel. Thanks to these four motors, combined power soars to 764 kW, with 1,198 Nm of torque. An outstanding level of performance that allows these vehicles to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just two and a half seconds, despite weighing close to 3.2 tonnes.

Compared with rivals such as the Tesla Cybertruck in its top-of-the-range Cyberbeast version, which has three motors delivering 621 kW, the Rivian Quad versions are faster, although not by much, just one tenth of a second. In addition, with a performance update, both models reach a top speed of 130 mph and cover the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds.

Other details worth noting

As for these new motors, developed by Rivian itself, they feature an oil cooling system, ideal for demanding driving conditions. The rear motors, with a longer gear ratio, are optimised to maximise power and torque, while the front ones prioritise efficiency. In Conserve mode, the rear motors are deactivated, increasing range by 26 miles, which is useful for daily use.

Both models are fitted with high-capacity 125 kWh batteries, allowing a range of up to 400 miles – 644 km – in Conserve mode under the EPA homologation cycle, or 374 miles – 600 km – with all-wheel drive activated. From 2026, these Quad versions will also come standard with a NACS charging port, allowing them to make better use of the Tesla Supercharger network without needing an adapter to charge.

Aesthetically, the Rivian Quad keeps a understated design, with details such as light blue brake calipers and optional 22-inch wheels. Inside, the Ascend edition stands out with quilted seats, decorative stitching, premium materials and bronze details with checkered patterns. To top it all off, the distinctive Gear Guard logo with flowing hair adorns the rear, giving it a much more playful touch.
