Subaru presents the 2017 update of the BRZ, its only coupe and rear-wheel-drive model. Although in the images it looks practically identical to the Subaru BRZ currently on sale, it receives important mechanical changes worth noting, both in the engine and in the chassis tuning, along with some slight cosmetic changes.

This model from the Japanese brand (like the Toyota GT86) has always been characterised by its sporty driving sensations, its low height and its excellent dynamic behaviour, even though its power was “only” 200 horsepower.

Full LED lighting in the front headlights and rear lightsAlthough the update we present here focuses on mechanical improvements, there are also slight changes to the bodywork and the cabin. For example, on the exterior the front bumper has been redesigned and new front headlights with LED lighting have been integrated. The fog lights also use LED lighting. It also features a rear spoiler made of aluminium to improve rear grip at high speeds, LED rear lights, and new 17-inch wheels with 10 spokes for the Limited Premium trim.

In the interior, the highlight is the new 4.2-inch LCD multifunction display integrated on the right side of the instrument cluster. It shows various driving information such as G-forces, throttle position, steering angle and some other data related to the vehicle’s operation.

The 2-litre boxer engine of the Subaru BRZ has received several improvements, although its power has only risen to 205 horsepower. Among other things, the aim has been to reduce internal friction with new valves, camshaft and cylinder heads. The intake and exhaust manifolds have also been changed for better airflow, and the final drive ratio has been slightly modified.

The BRZ considerably improves its structural rigidity after this update In the chassis, the changes come from new springs and dampers, and a new, thicker rear anti-roll bar. Key points such as the suspension mounts, the transmission mounts and the wheel arches have also been reinforced. Added to this is the new stability control programming, which makes it even more permissive in the new “Track” mode, previously called “Sport”.

Subaru offers, in addition to the Premium and Limited trims, a high-performance package with Brembo brakes and larger discs on both axles, Sachs dampers also on both axles, and specific wheels.

The Japanese brand states that the first units of the coupe’s update will reach the market in September, although for now this is only official for the American market. We do not know when the revised Subaru BRZ will arrive in Europe or whether all the changes seen for the US market will also arrive here.
