SUVs, the cars favoured by the younger generation
Younger drivers are opting for a city-style vehicle with a sporty spirit, one able to convey the active, dynamic lifestyle that comes with an age where what matters is not so much luxury as the chance to enjoy life

Every age has its tastes, in food, drink, clothing and, of course, cars. Younger people have always preferred cars that make them stand out from the rest and reflect that drive for adventure, speed and prestige. Well, perhaps that last point is not the most important, and other motives stand out more. So, according to a study carried out by Ford, it is no surprise that people aged between 17 and 34 prefer to have an SUV parked in their garage.
This age bracket is made up of what are known as “millennials“. According to this study, which was carried out in Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom, most people in this age range prefer a car that is imposing, safe and able to convey an active, agile lifestyle. In other words, an off-roader with a presence that catches the eye and gives them the active image typical of their age.
Bearing in mind that “millennials” make up 24% of the adult population of Europe, and that the study’s figures show that 1 in 4 of them would be willing to buy an SUV, and that this type of car is ideal for their lifestyle, this amounts to a sizeable number of vehicles entering the market. At present, SUVs account for 20% of cars on Europe’s roads. With these figures, it is expected that by 2020 a 27% share will be reached for this type of vehicle.
A trend justified by the arrival of off-road vehicles from several brands that are not only capable of taking their occupants over very difficult terrain, but also offer comfort identical to that of cars with a more urban focus, such as saloons.
The study found that more than 50% of the 5,000 people surveyed believe that an SUV is the safest car, the one that handles best both on the road and in the countryside, and that it most accurately represents an urban yet adventurous lifestyle. A car which, according to those surveyed, suits both lifestyles and embodies the spirit of youth: urban, yet able to enjoy free time.
For Ford, these figures are encouraging, since it is about to launch the Ford Edge, a large SUV that will shortly arrive on the European market. With these results, it can be said that we will soon see more SUVs on our streets. What do you think of this type of vehicle? Are you one of those who prefers an off-roader to a saloon?
