Suzuki renews its iconic dual sport range with the new and redesigned DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM to meet Euro 5+ regulations, with more technology and performance

Suzuki has made a splash at the EICMA Show in Milan with the presentation of two fully updated models from its legendary dual sport range: the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM. These motorcycles have been renewed to meet Euro 5+ emissions standards and to comply with the environmental and safety regulations in force in Europe, marking a new chapter for the saga that began in 2000 with the popular DR-Z400S.

The original DR-Z400S gained fame thanks to its versatility and ease of riding on any terrain. With its compact 398 cm³ engine, 4-stroke, DOHC and liquid-cooled, this motorcycle became the favourite of those seeking an agile and reliable dual sport, capable of tackling forest tracks and rural roads as well as urban journeys. The arrival in 2005 of the DR-Z400SM, a supermotard version aimed at dominating tarmac, further expanded the popularity of the range.

However, demanding environmental regulations have led Suzuki to redesign these models. Thus, the new DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM have been upgraded to comply with the Euro 5+ regulation, including advanced OBD II diagnostic systems and the latest braking and noise regulations.

Technology and performance taken to another level

One of the most outstanding aspects of these new versions is the inclusion of advanced technology to enhance the riding experience. Suzuki has integrated the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS), which allows the rider to select riding modes according to conditions; the Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS), which improves traction on any surface; and a switchable ABS braking system on the DR-Z4S, ideal for those seeking greater control on dirt and gravel roads.

In addition, Suzuki has completely revised the engine, optimised the chassis and swingarm, and incorporated elements such as LED lighting and a modern LCD instrument cluster, retaining its iconic design while updating it to compete in today’s market.

DR-Z4S: the ultimate dual sport

The DR-Z4S is designed for those who want to explore both the city and nature. With a ground clearance of 300 mm and a seat height of 920 mm, this motorcycle promises comfort and stability on uneven terrain. Its weight of 151 kg and its 21-inch front tyre allow an agile and versatile riding experience, a characteristic that has defined the DR-Z range since its beginnings.

DR-Z4SM

For those who prefer the thrill of the supermoto, the DR-Z4SM brings all the power and control needed to enjoy the streets like a true playground. This version features 17-inch wheels at both the front and rear, and a slightly shorter suspension travel, designed for dynamic riding in the city or on supermotard tracks. With a seat height of 890 mm and a weight of 154 kg, the DR-Z4SM stands out as a light and highly manoeuvrable motorcycle.

Both models share a 4-stroke single-cylinder engine, with a displacement of 398 cm³ and liquid cooling, capable of producing 38 CV at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 37 Nm at 6,500 rpm. These features, together with their fuel efficiency — 3.4 l/100 km in the SM version and 3.5 l/100 km in the S version. CO₂ emissions stand at 82 g/km and 80 g/km, respectively, which demonstrates Suzuki’s commitment to the environment.
