Tesla prepares a specific Model 3 for the British police

Tesla UK is building a variant of the Tesla Model 3 designed for the police fleet, which it plans to present soon to various emergency services.

One of the big questions emerging around electric cars is whether they are capable of performing as a police vehicle just as a conventional combustion-engine car would. Several models have already been incorporated into police forces around the world. In fact, the New York Police Department has added several units to its fleet, as have other law enforcement agencies in the United States.

But serious doubts have arisen since an electric police car ran out of battery in the middle of a chase, which allowed the vehicle it was pursuing to escape. Even so, European regulations foresee the end of combustion engines by 2030, so there is no choice but to keep testing them and see whether they are truly valid for providing a real service. Tesla has built a variant of the Model 3 designed for the British police fleet, which will be tested shortly.

A police vehicle with the quality of Tesla

The most curious thing about this is that this car is not being built at the request of the police, but rather is a proposal from Tesla UK to show to British security forces. In other words, it is not being manufactured according to their specifications; it will be shown as an option, and we assume it will be modified according to the needs of each force.

Nor has it been made public what modifications the Model 3 will receive to serve in the police, so it is assumed it will be similar to the basic model. It will, however, come with the usual equipment for these cars. The livery and emergency lights will be among the additions, and we assume the interior will be adapted for use. This model could serve both police and other emergency services.

The Tesla Model 3 Performance, which could be the chosen one for this role, has a range of 500 kilometres and can reach a top speed of 261 km/h, so it is well suited to the job. Only care would need to be taken not to run out of energy in the middle of a shift, and it would be ideal for the purpose. That said, the UK has not yet stated whether it wants or needs this model for emergencies, although we think it would be a good addition for the police.
