Problems for the Hyundai Ioniq 5: some owners report a coolant leak

Several buyers of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in South Korea have reported a small leak of coolant, although the brand insists there is no risk.

Not long ago, Korean buyers of the Hyundai Kona Electric had to face a serious problem: several units of this model caught fire due to an internal fault, and they had to undergo a thorough inspection to determine the cause and repair it. Now, Hyundai is facing a similar problem with the Ioniq 5, although, fortunately, no fire has occurred.

The problem detected is a coolant leak, which could lead to a similar issue. However, the brand insists that the risk of the car catching fire does not exist and that this problem can be resolved easily and without endangering users. The difference from the Kona Electric case is significant, as there are very few Ioniq 5 units distributed in the country.

Ioniq 5 recall

There are no details about how many Ioniq 5 units have been found with this problem, although it is known that there are few units distributed in the Korean market. This makes it relatively simple to carry out a recall and check the cooling system to determine the extent of the problem.

For the time being, an inspection of all units put on sale will be carried out, to ensure this is not a problem, and the leak will be repaired if it exists. This problem has not been detected in units sold in Europe, although this does not mean it does not exist. In fact, the units sold in Europe come from the same plant as the cars reported in Korea.

The fault may be due to a production defect during vehicle assembly, when handling the pump that circulates this liquid. The brand already knows the problem and how to prevent it from happening again. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is built on the E-GMP platform, which it shares with the Kia EV6, although no problem has been detected in the latter.

For the time being, users of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can rest easy and need not worry. If they detect this coolant leak, they should go to the brand’s authorised workshop to check the problem and, if it exists, have it fixed to avoid risks.
