The all-new Mercedes-Benz Citan is revealed in full, and this is what awaits us

The shadow of Mercedes is long, so much so that its sales figures are also successful for its commercial vehicle division, where both the Sprinter and the Vito have become benchmarks in the “Large” and “Midsize” segments. The star brand also wants to carry this success over into the “Small Van” segment, where the Citan will be the spearhead, a van that has been completely redesigned for its second generation.

Announced for presentation at the end of August, the all-new Mercedes-Benz Citan reveals the new look it will debut for its second generation, featuring a completely renewed style. Looking at the front, we see a new front grille that now has rounder and smoother lines, flanked on both sides by a new light unit with a more streamlined and sharper design, while at the bottom the bumper has fewer plastic areas and incorporates a narrower central section.

From the side, we can see that both the wheel arches and the shoulders are even more pronounced, which translates into an image of greater stance. The rear has also been significantly renewed, as has the front, where depending on the version there will be either a double door or tailgate opening, with a new light unit on each side that now has much smaller dimensions compared with the outgoing model.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz Citan will be offered from the outset in the Furgón and Tourer versions, both available in the BASE (model with all basic equipment) and PRO (with a distinctive design and extended equipment) trim levels, to which versions with a long wheelbase and mixed configuration will be added later. In any case, regardless of the version chosen, the new Citan offers more cargo space than the outgoing model; for example, the Furgón version offers a cargo space length of 3.05 metres, accessible through the rear doors or the side doors, as it can be fitted with one on each side.

The interior of the all-new Mercedes-Benz Citan also receives a major facelift, in which horizontal lines are the main feature, while for curved areas such as the instrument cluster, Mercedes’s designers drew inspiration from the profile of a wing to convey a continuous and more spacious design. It has also become more technologically advanced and, taking the new Sprinter as a reference, the Citan can also be fitted with the MBUX infotainment system, a 7-inch touchscreen, or the Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel.

Naturally, in terms of safety, both mechanically and technologically, the new Citan has also been improved. In the first area, it features, for example, suspensions that improve comfort when driving for the Tourer version, while the Furgón version receives specific suspensions optimised to carry heavy loads. In the second area, the new Citan receives a wide technology package thanks to various safety systems, and can now incorporate systems such as active lane change detection, active braking assist, active lane change detection, blind spot monitoring and active steering assist, among others.

Mechanically, the Mercedes-Benz Citan will be offered with the 1.461 cc four-cylinder CDI diesel engine in power outputs of 75, 95 and 116 CV, the latter featuring the Overpower function, which briefly boosts power up to 121 CV and torque up to 295 Nm. The petrol options come from the 1.332 cc, also four-cylinder, engine in power outputs of 102 and 131 CV. All engines come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, but for the most powerful versions of each engine there will be the option of a seven-speed DCT automatic dual-clutch gearbox.

Later on, from the second half of 2022, the range will be expanded with the fully electric eCitan, about which the brand has not yet revealed many details, although they assure us we can expect a range of around 285 km according to the WLTP test cycle and, at fast-charging stations, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80% of its capacity in around 40 minutes.

For now, the brand has not revealed the prices of the all-new Mercedes-Benz Citan, although we will not have to wait long to find out, as orders can begin from mid-September of this year, while future owners will be able to start receiving them at the end of October.
