The Audi R8 continues its road towards full electrification
The German brand wants to turn the new R8 into an electric vehicle that sets the trend for Audi in electrification and becomes its flagship.

The Audi R8 is one of the brand’s models that is about to undergo one of its most drastic changes. The brand’s path towards electrification is unstoppable, and it is expected that it will soon become one of the models to be driven by an electric powertrain. Its launch will come in the middle of the decade and will confirm the trend among the main brands of keeping their key models but in an electrified version.
With this electrified version, the Audi R8 will become one of the most important models in the brand’s range, once 2026 arrives, the date set for the brand to move definitively to electric mobility. Even so, although this seems confirmed, the data that will make up the configuration of this model has not been made public.

However, the European specialist press, personified in Autocar, emphasises that the platform that will be used as the basis for this model will be the SSP Sport. This platform has been developed together with Porsche and will be used in upcoming generations of the Taycan and the Audi E-tron GT. Another possibility being considered is that a new platform will be used, which will be employed in the new Porsche Boxster and Cayman.
This platform has been designed to place the batteries vertically behind the seats. As for the engines to be used, there is no information about them. What does seem likely is that Audi wants it to have more power than the RS E-TRon GT. This means it would offer more than the 637 CV that model provides.
The chances of it reaching 800 CV are not far-fetched, since Audi announces that its models will receive a power increase over the coming years. And this is only for the first version. One can expect that there will be a version with even higher power.
Sebastian Grams, head of Audi Sport, has explained to Autocar that the possibility of having an electric Audi R8 is something that is not yet confirmed as a production vehicle. Even so, Grams is fighting to make it happen. His idea, which seems to be quite popular among the Audi board, is that the essence of the model is maintained, with many elements handmade. Will we see it soon? We hope they won’t take long to confirm it, and we can enjoy a model that is expected to be surprising.
