The CUPRA Tavascan will be manufactured in China at the end of 2023

CUPRA’s new electric SUV will be manufactured at the Chinese plant in Hefei, with the start of production scheduled for the end of 2023.

The CUPRA Tavascan has been scheduled for launch in 2024, but it will come with a surprise. Unlike other models from the brand, which has separated from SEAT, it will not be built at the Martorell plant. The decision made by the brand of the Volkswagen Group is that this model will be assembled at the group’s plant in Hefei, in China.

This electric model will be the first to roll off the assembly line of the Asian plant. The Barcelona plant will continue assembling the CUPRA Formentor and the Urban Rebel, but this new electric offering from the Spanish manufacturer will be built in China.

The model is based on the MEB platform, which is also used by other group models such as the Volkswagen ID5, the ID6, the Skoda Enyaq iV Coupe and the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback, which has also been allocated to the Hefei plant. So the new Tavascan will take advantage of this platform, used in vehicles intended for the Chinese market, to be assembled at this factory.

This plant has been designed to accept the production of this type of vehicle and has the technology needed to adapt to the model’s requirements. The CUPRA Tavascan was designed and developed in Barcelona, but its manufacturing required technology and technical capabilities that were not available at the Volkswagen plant in Martorell, so the search began for the most suitable plant to carry it out.

This is the Hefei plant, the most recent and modern in the group. So production has been moved there. And, as an interesting detail, it should be noted that the Tavascan will not be sold in China. All vehicles leaving the factory will be exported to the countries where the brand is present.

The planned production for the Volkswagen new plant in Hefei is 350,000 units per year, so it will become one of the most productive in the group worldwide.

Martorell continues its transformation

Meanwhile, investment is being made in the Martorell plant to adapt it to the production of electric models for the group. This means that from 2025 onwards it will be able to host the assembly of cars based on a new platform of the Volkswagen dedicated to electric cars.
