The electric truck from Tesla is set to revolutionise the freight transport market

After several delays, Tesla has finally shown the public the Semi, its electric truck proposal, which is expected to reach the market from 2019 onwards

The wait is over: last night, in the United States, the presentation of the Tesla Semi took place. That is, the first fully electric truck from the brand led by Elon Musk. It is not the first zero-emission truck to be unveiled, but coming from one of the leading companies in electric mobility, it is quite significant, as it has every chance of becoming a real and effective option in a short time. The Semi has arrived and presents very attractive figures that are set to revolutionise road transport. The photos from the presentation reached us through Carscoops.

From all the data, one very important point stands out. The range promised by Elon Musk is 804 kilometres, a more than acceptable figure for intercity transport of this kind. This is when towing a load of just over 36,000 kg; if it runs empty, the range will increase because it will not need to deliver as much power. At maximum load, it will be able to reach 100 km/h in 20 seconds, and without the load, that time drops to five seconds.

This is made possible by the four independent motors mounted on the Semi’s rear wheels, which provide enough power to achieve these impressive figures. One of the functions of these motors is to prevent the truck from “jackknifing“, that is, folding in on itself under load and causing dangerous situations. Because each motor is independent of the others, the traction system adjusts the torque dynamically to prevent such situations from occurring.

The driver will sit in a central position in the cab, facing two large screens, and will have access to the improved Autopilot. Among other technologies, it will include a lane-keeping system and automatic emergency braking. This is the company’s first prototype, so we will be watching for usage data to confirm that it does not run into problems during its first journeys, although the brand says it is very satisfied with the results obtained.

Regarding battery charging, Tesla will offer Supercharger stations to keep the batteries topped up, enabling enough charge to cover almost 650 km in just 30 minutes, which is also worth noting.
