The Ford Mustang Mach 1 is already here, loaded with nostalgia and a raw, no-nonsense 480 CV

It was only a few weeks ago that Ford previewed the return of a legend, the revival of a name that once marked a before and after, the Mustang Mach 1. As promised, this acclaimed variant of the quintessential muscle car is here, stronger than ever and with a spirit that recalls the ancestors who won so many hearts. Following the same formula, the house of the oval has achieved a spicier result while keeping its charismatic DNA intact, which lends the Mustang a dose of personality.

But to achieve this, the engineers at Ford had to considerably alter the ingredients of the recipe, which has given the Mach 1 name more meaning than ever. This has also been made possible thanks to the contribution of the Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500, Mustang variants that have generously donated certain mechanical components to this old acquaintance.

The foundation the American brand started from is the colossal, exuberant Coyote engine, a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 that powers the GT version of the Mustang. However, the highlight of this heart lies in the modifications it has received courtesy of its bigger siblings.

With this premise, the Mach 1 receives the intake manifold and the oil cooler from the Shelby GT350, which allows it to increase its cooling capacity by 50%. The six-speed manual Tremec gearbox also comes from that variant, although as an option you can choose a ten-speed automatic torque converter transmission, specifically calibrated for this version.

All these new elements allow the V8 to increase its total output to 480 CV and 570 Nm of torque, figures that place it just above the Bullitt. To further enhance the formula, Ford offers aesthetic upgrades through the so-called Handling Pack, which includes specific 19-inch wheels, a front fascia adorned with two spheres that pay homage to the quad headlamps of the original Mach 1, a spoiler designed to improve aerodynamics and a front splitter inherited directly from the GT500.

It will reach dealerships in the United States and Canada in spring 2021 as a limited edition and as one of the purest Mustangs of all time. For now, Ford has made no statement regarding the European market, but we trust the oval brand has not forgotten the muscle car enthusiasts on the other side of the pond.
