The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell with hydrogen fuel cell arrives in Europe

Yesterday we discussed the project through which BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche and Ford have joined forces to set up an infrastructure that will allow electric vehicle users to drive along Europe’s main motorways and highways with the assurance of fast charging and of finding charging points every few kilometres. Alongside this project is another one from the European Union called HyFIVE, short for Hydrogen for Innovative Vehicles.

Of these five participating brands, the one we are concerned with now is Honda, which is already unloading the first six units of its Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, which will be delivered to customers in London and Copenhagen. It is worth recalling that the Clarity Fuel Cell is a vehicle which, thanks to its hydrogen fuel cell, delivers 177 CV of power with a real-world range of 589 km as certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency. With this range figure it takes first place over any other production vehicle with zero harmful emissions.

The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, together with other models such as the Toyota Mirai, is another very good alternative within the range of electric vehicles, all the more so if we bear in mind that for the time being the hydrogen fuel cell offers greater range and an infinitely faster refuelling; in fact it is so quick that we would only need around 3 minutes.

For the time being, neither the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell nor any of these vehicles is available for purchase in Spain, nor do we know when they will land on the Iberian Peninsula or when there will be an infrastructure that makes their purchase worthwhile. What we do know, from the words of Takahiro Hachigo, president of Honda, is that by 2030 two-thirds of the brand’s global sales must be electric vehicles.
