The Leapmotor B10 will be built in Zaragoza: could it end up being a Opel?

The Leapmotor B10 is an SUV from China and one of the brand’s big bets for winning over the European market. The news that has just been made public is that this SUV is going to be built at the plant that Stellantis has in Figueruelas, Zaragoza. This operation will allow the SUV to be produced on European soil and it is very important: the cost will be lower, which will allow for a more competitive price.

To secure a place for the model at the Spanish production plant, Leapmotor has signed a collaboration agreement with Stellantis. An investment valued at 200 million dollars will allow the Zaragoza factory to host the model in its facilities. This news is important, since production was expected to take place at the Tychy plant.

The change of plans is due to the intentions of the Polish government, which do not align with what both companies need. The attention of Stellantis and Leapmotor has turned to Spain, and this is the location chosen for the production of the Chinese SUV. The strategic location of the Zaragoza plant and its characteristics make it the ideal site for manufacturing this SUV.

Another important factor in favour of this factory is the upcoming construction of a CATL battery manufacturing plant in the same region. In this way, these batteries could form part of the project and make everything simpler and more efficient.

Leapmotor or Opel?

In principle, the model will be treated as an SUV Leapmotor. That said, the agreement with Stellantis allows the automotive group to work on and develop a similar SUV. And there it can achieve a very similar vehicle under the umbrella of Opel with considerable savings, which will make the agreement between the companies profitable.

And, of course, integrating production of the Leapmotor B10 will allow the Figueruelas plant to maintain a good production level for several years.
