The Mercedes Clase G Baby will not be electric only: it will also be available in a hybrid version

The upcoming arrival of the Mercedes Clase G brings us a surprise, since this model was going to be electric only, but now it will have a hybrid version.

The Mercedes Clase G Baby is set to arrive in 2027 and will bring the popular off-roader into a smaller and more manageable size. This model was going to be fully electric in order to fully embrace electric mobility. But market reality has set in, and the German brand has concluded that it would not be profitable for the off-roader to rely solely on an electric powertrain.

So the brand has announced that this model will also be available in a hybrid version, which will complement the range for those who want a combustion engine to power this compact off-roader. The engine that will equip this model comes from the Mercedes-Benz CLA saloon.

This 1.5-litre engine was developed by Mercedes and manufactured by Horse Powertrain in China. This company was created by Renault and Geely and has specialised in producing engines for third parties. It is not yet known what power output this engine will deliver in the new Clase G Baby, but when fitted to the CLA it produces 208 CV and a maximum torque of 380 Nm. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration is quoted at 7.1 seconds.

The electric motor coupled to the gearbox allows the vehicle to run in electric-only mode for short periods. In the electric version, it will be equipped with two electric motors and all-wheel drive so that it never loses the strength of its off-road character.

In this case it will feature an 86 kWh battery, which will give it a range of 724 kilometres on the WLTP cycle, making it a good option for those who choose it. In both cases, electric and hybrid, they will have all-wheel drive and a torque-vectoring transmission, allowing each wheel to receive the torque it needs to carry out its off-road functions.

There is still some time before we see what this model has in store, but we are learning more details and will soon have further information. We will keep you updated as the information reaches us. The images are of the standard Mercedes Clase G, but we will soon have photos of this new model, with design details.
