The Mercedes Vito electric heads to the Arctic Circle to demonstrate its reliability and durability

Mercedes has put one of its electric vehicles, the eVito, to the test. The chosen destination was Sweden, where they faced temperatures of 30 degrees below zero

When developing a new vehicle, manufacturers run a variety of tests to check safety and durability among other factors before launching the product onto the market. The same happens when brands adopt a new type of powertrain, as is the case with the daring Mercedes eVito, the electric version of the German van.

Mercedes has shown it has enough nerve to take its new product to one of the most remote and coldest places on the planet, the Arctic Circle. You may be wondering why such a journey, but the star brand wanted to make sure its new electric van is not only efficient in everyday territory, but is also capable of facing the harshest and most adverse weather conditions, and so it has been.

Specifically, they travelled to Arjeplog, Sweden, one of the northernmost points in the country. In this location, as you can imagine, cold and sub-zero temperatures prevail 24 hours a day, but that was exactly what Mercedes was looking for. Located just 100 kilometres from the Arctic Circle, the eVito was able to cover long distances despite the conditions they were in.

It is true that the reactions of a combustion engine to different climates are well documented , but an electric powertrain lacks many of the components found in a petrol vehicle. With this premise, Mercedes wanted to check how the eVito responds in these circumstances, and the results surprised the German team.

The company tested driving dynamics, interior comfort, component durability and, of course, battery charging. To do so, Mercedes engineers drove in a completely everyday manner during their stay in Arjeplog. What drew the most attention was the reaction of the eVito’s motor, since its range was barely affected despite the 30-degree-below-zero conditions.

Recall that the German van has a powertrain capable of delivering 41.4 kWh, which translates into a range of 150 kilometres, which was only reduced to 100 kilometres despite the situation. At the same time, the eVito’s comfort in these weather conditions was also tested, that is, the climate control system for both the cabin and the front and rear windows. Both systems worked perfectly, allowing its occupants to successfully withstand the extreme cold to which they were exposed.

This is only the beginning, because although the Mercedes eVito will start being delivered throughout 2018, the company will continue testing this model. Specifically, they will travel to southern Spain in the summer to carry out a similar experiment but with temperatures closer to 40 degrees Celsius.
