Volkswagen officially launched today the North American version of the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, in its world premiere, although in Europe it is not known exactly whether the model will be similar or not. Initially, the new Jetta launched today takes the brand’s new flagship design in terms of exterior design, of which we already saw a preview in the Phaeton and in the Passat that was leaked a few days ago, as well as the attractive NCC Concept and a touch of the Scirocco in the front.

From what has been said about the Jetta, this model is longer than the previous generation by almost 10 centimetres and also a little wider, so there will be considerable interior room, improving passenger comfort. Despite an increase in size and the changes made to the bodywork, Volkswagen announced that this new model will be sold at a lower price than its predecessor.

The interior is where we stumble. Volkswagen considered that the new Jetta did not deserve any change to its interior at all, so we find the same as the outgoing Jetta. For North America, there will also be another technical aspect that will not change, something that has provoked some mixed opinions, as we will see below.

In the engines section, in Europe we know the Jetta will receive many variants, as Volkswagen has accustomed us to: the 1.2 with 105 hp, the 1.2 TSI with 122 hp, the 1.4 TSI with 160 hp and the two-litre with 200 hp. Except for the 1.2, the other engines will offer a dual-clutch gearbox as an option. For diesels, the range starts with the 1.6 with 105 hp and the two-litre with 140 hp. The 1.2 TSI petrol and the 1.6 diesel will be fitted with BlueMotion technology, and all engines will be turbocharged.

And this is where Americans are kicking up a fuss, since in North America the Jetta will continue to be sold with the 2.5 five-cylinder, the same engine as its predecessor. As a consolation, other options will be different diesel and petrol variants of the two-litre engine.
