The new Audi RS4 will use e-turbo technology

A4 2016 1

Just a few weeks ago, Audi launched the new generation of its compact saloon, the A4, one of its most successful models.

Within the A4 family, the people from Ingolstadt also offer us more sporty variants named S4 and RS4, the latter being the one that will use e-turbo technology in this new generation.

The S4 model, an intermediate step within the A4’s performance range, will mount an engine with a similar layout to that of the outgoing generation, namely a 3-litre V6 with forced induction. It remains to be seen whether the forced induction will be handled by a supercharger (as in this generation) or by a turbo. The S4 currently produces 333 CV, so the new S4 will almost certainly exceed 350 CV.

As for the RS4, we are talking about the very best, the top step of the range. That is why the people at Audi always fit the most technologically advanced engine they have on the shelves. In this new generation they will not be any different. The first generation of the RS4 had a 2.7 V6 twin-turbo engine producing 380 CV, making it one of the fastest Audi of its time.

The second generation of the RS4 switched to V8s, fitted with a 4.2 V8 naturally aspirated direct-injection engine that soon went on to power none other than the R8. Its 420 CV and its raw, sporty feel made the RS4 B7 a true legend. The RS4 B8, sold until now, again relied on the same engine, although with some revisions that raised its output to 450 CV.

For the new RS4, Audi will return to forced-induction V6s, using E-Turbo technology, that is, electrically driven turbochargers, which will offer instant response and a truly sporty feel. The RS4 B9 is expected to deliver output close to 480 CV, thus matching rivals such as the C63 AMG, with 476 CV.
