The new Jeep Wrangler 4xe promises to be as wild as ever but more respectful than ever
In Detroit, the new Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid has been unveiled in its still-pre-production version, yet with off-road capabilities

Evolution or revolution has come to Jeep because, beyond the introduction of the Jeep Renegade 4xe and Jeep Compass 4xe, the nature of a true off-road vehicle, whose limits are set only by the judgment and risk of whoever drives one of these machines, now involves adopting “greater environmental responsibility,” as the information from the quintessential off-roader’s manufacturer states.
And although at first glance the new Jeep Wrangler PHEV is distinguished only by its livery, which adopts Blue Electric as a mark of distinction from its traditional siblings, and by the access door to the charging point of the electrical energy storage system, the architecture of this car is based on the current one, adapted to its make-up as a 4×4 plug-in hybrid vehicle.
Thus, on the front axle sits one of the electric motors. In reality it is a starter-generator that replaces the traditional alternator but, combined with the one located in the transmission, enables propulsion without fossil fuel for more than 40 kilometres.
Although Jeep has presented a pre-production vehicle without definitive commercial specifications, the 17 kWh battery can store enough energy to drive exclusively, in hybrid mode, or to hold charge thanks to the three driving modes (Hybrid -default-, Electric, or eSave -which does not use electricity-). The combined consumption announced for this Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, is 4.8 litres of fuel consumed per hundred kilometres travelled.

As if that were not enough, this hybrid setup retains the already well-known architectural strengths: Dana 44 front and rear axles, permanent four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case with low range, a limited-slip differential, and TT dimensions with an approach angle of 44 degrees, a breakover angle of 22.5 and a departure angle of 35.6, which, together with a ground clearance of 50 centimetres and a wading depth of up to 76 cm, make this Jeep Wrangler 4xe as capable as ever but more sustainable than ever.

The plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler in its definitive version will arrive globally, but first at dealerships in the United States early next year. It will subsequently follow suit in Europe and China and will be sold under the variants Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe.
