In the world of motoring, evolution is constant and accelerated, especially when we talk about technology. The competition to offer more attractive and technologically advanced vehicles is constant and difficult, and in this context, Peugeot has taken a giant step into the future with the presentation of its new generation of models: the Peugeot 308, 408 and 508. These vehicles not only impress with their sporty design, but also mark a before and after in lighting technology with their innovative Matrix LED lights.

Since its beginnings in 1889 with the legendary Peugeot Type 1, the Lion brand has been one of the first to integrate technical and aesthetic advances into its lighting systems. From the elegant headlights hidden beneath the grille of the Peugeot 402 to the iconic feline gaze of the Peugeot 206, Peugeot has maintained a constant commitment to innovation in technology and design.

The arrival of LED technology in 2012 was a revolution in the automotive industry. Light-emitting diodes offered unprecedented freedom in designing lighting components, freeing them from the shape and size limitations imposed by earlier technologies such as halogen and xenon. In addition, LEDs stand out for their longevity, which is 10 to 15 times greater than that of halogen bulbs, and for their energy efficiency, which contributes to a reduction in CO2 emissions.

The renewal of the Peugeot range in the C and D segments with the launch of the new Peugeot 308, 408 and 508 has marked a milestone in performance and design. The Peugeot Matrix LED light units represent the culmination of this vision, unifying the brand’s characteristic light signature with a sharp gaze and the incorporation of the three-claw emblem at both the front and the rear.

How does it work?

The magic behind this system lies in its 20 LED diodes, which continuously adjust the shape and intensity of the light beam according to the external conditions detected by a camera located at the top of the windscreen. When the presence of other vehicles is detected, these lighting segments dim or switch off, creating precisely calculated shadow zones that do not affect visibility and prevent dazzling other drivers.

But the Peugeot Matrix LED technology does not stop there. Besides guaranteeing optimal lighting in all circumstances, it is capable of automatically switching between different modes according to external conditions. For example, in city mode, when the vehicle travels at speeds between 0 and 50 km/h, the dipped beams come on, providing adequate lighting for urban driving. As the vehicle accelerates and reaches speeds between 50 and 110 km/h, the headlights switch to high beam mode, deploying their full light output.

When the speed exceeds 110 km/h for more than 5 seconds, the Motorway Mode comes into play, which slightly adjusts the angle of the high-beam light to illuminate more effectively without dazzling other drivers. As soon as the vehicle reduces its speed to below 90 km/h for more than 5 seconds, the light beam returns to its original position.
