The new Tesla Cybertruck will have 3 electric motors and a range of more than 800 kilometers

Elon Musk has unveiled the long-awaited fully electric pick-up truck called the Cybertruck from Tesla last night in California. This may sound strange, but the model features wedge-shaped lines that recall the presence of an armored police vehicle.

As with the company’s other efforts, Palto Alto’s Tesla wants to disrupt the pick-up segment, which is very contested but also very lucrative, especially in the United States.

After seven years in the shadows, the Tesla Cybertruck, or CYBRTRK, as some at Tesla like to call it, is a futuristic-looking truck, though unpolished, with a wedge shape. With 5,885 mm long, 2,027 mm wide and 1,905 mm high, capable of seating six people, it fits very well among the many offerings of the F-150 from Ford.

Although Elon Musk did not show the interior of the electric truck during the event, the company released a single image. It is even simpler and more minimalist than usual for a Tesla, with its typical huge touchscreen in the middle, two rows of three seats each, and a steering wheel in the style of the Knight Rider 2000 that (probably) will not make it into production. There is also the upper part of the dashboard, which looks like a marble-style quartz slab from a kitchen countertop. Or maybe that is just the image. Who knows.

How is the new Tesla Cybertruck?

If there is one thing Tesla has never been shy about, it is offering out-of-this-world performance, and the same applies to the Cybertruck, with the most powerful Tri-Motor AWD version accelerating to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and completing the quarter mile in 10.8 seconds. For reference, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye special 2019 does 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and the quarter mile in 10.8 seconds. This configuration offers a driving range of more than 800 km and a top speed of 209 km/h. It will cost close to 70,000 euros.

Two other models will be available: the base Cybertruck RWD Single Motor priced at 40,000 euros with a range of more than 400 km and 0-100 in 6.5 seconds, and the mid-level Dual Motor variant starting at 50,000 euros, which offers 0-100 in 4.5 seconds and a range of more than 480 km.

Elon Musk stated during his presentation that the battery-powered truck will work like a Porsche, even showing a video of the Cybertruck accelerating alongside a Porsche 911, but at the same time it offers commendable off-road capabilities, with an approach angle of 35 degrees, a departure angle of 28 degrees and up to 40 cm of ground clearance. As for towing, and apart from a video Musk showed of the Cybertruck destroying an F-150, it will have a towing capacity starting at 3,401 kg and reaching up to 6,350 kg.

Musk had Tesla employees ‘abuse’ the Cybertruck by hitting its chassis with sledgehammers and throwing metal balls at the windows. Why? To demonstrate that Tesla is strong. Now, while the stainless steel chassis proved its metal, the supposedly unbreakable windows did not fare as well and shattered. “We’ll fix it in production,” Musk joked.

Unlike competitors that have a body-on-frame design, the Cybertruck has a stainless steel monocoque construction. Other highlights include air suspension and the 2 m bed that Tesla calls the Vault, which has a lockable tonneau cover offering 2,831 liters of protected cargo storage. Tesla also parked an ATV, although it did not give further details about it.

The California automaker is already accepting refundable deposits of 100 dollars for the new Cybertruck. This new electric model is scheduled to enter production in 2021, in its one- and two-motor versions, while the more powerful tri-motor model could arrive the following year, that is, in 2022.
