The Opel Omega would return alongside the Cadillac XTS and the Saab 9-8

A new Opel Omega could be on the verge of returning thanks to the Saab 9-8 project that GM had kept in the freezer following Saab’s bankruptcy.

More than once I have said it and I will repeat it: the car industry sometimes keeps up its sleeve surprising twists that are hard to imagine, such as the case of the return of the Opel Omega. But the comeback of the extinct flagship of Opel would not be thanks to the same Opel, but to Saab and the Cadillac XTS.

Months before Saab met the sad end it did, General Motors was preparing a large saloon based on the Cadillac XTS, which was to be called the imaginary Saab 9-8. Unfortunately, you already know that plans like this have ended up in the archives or, in the worst case, in the bin, given the fate Saab suffered.

Nevertheless, it seems General Motors is willing to revive the project and hand it over to Opel, so that the German brand can unveil the successor to the Omega saga. And now that Karl-Friedrich Stracke has left the management of Opel (he disagreed with producing an E-segment saloon, preferring a crossover as the flagship), at GM’s request, the plans for the Opel Omega have resurfaced.

Like the Cadillac XTS, the future Omega is said to feature front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive, and a V6 engine, along with several diesel options, as befits a true Opel built in Europe. The launch date would be close, as the start of 2013 is mentioned as very likely.
