Renault starts selling the new 5 E-Tech, for now in two trims and with the higher-capacity battery

Early this year a legendary name returned to the international scene, the Renault 5, iconic in the past but with a future still to be written in a completely different new era, as it is now an electric vehicle. Furthermore, the brand has stated since its presentation that it would be the first fully electric vehicle for the masses, at an affordable price. Will it achieve this?

Before answering this question, let’s look at what the new Renault 5 E-Tech offers, because Renault also stated that the basic version, the most stripped-down so to speak, will be the truly affordable one, and it comes with a 40 kWh battery that gives it a range of 300 kilometres, still pending homologation under the WLTP test cycle.

Therefore, the version of the Renault 5 E-Tech now arriving at Spanish dealerships is the one with a 150 CV electric motor designed by Ampere, paired with a 52 kWh battery that gives it a range of 410 kilometres under the WLTP test cycle. This battery can be charged via the 11 kW charger for alternating current, which enables the V2L (to charge a device using the car’s battery) and V2G (to charge the battery when electricity demand is low and feed energy back to the grid otherwise) technologies; and the compatible charger for fast charging with peaks of 100 kW, which will allow it to go from 10% to 80% charge in 30 minutes.

From its launch, the new Renault 5 E-Tech can be chosen in yellow pop!, green pop!, night blue, pearl white and gloss black, but one of its major assets is that it will be highly customisable, all of it after going through the dealership. In this way the Renault 5 E-Tech will offer up to 200 combinations including colours, wheels, vinyls and roof trims, not forgetting that the 19 litres of interior storage are customisable and configurable through 3D-printed accessories, which hopefully will not be as absurd as the basket that can be installed to carry bread.

Note that at launch the Renault 5 E-Tech will be available, first, in the Techno trim, which includes as standard items such as the following:

  • Heat pump
  • 11 kW AC bidirectional charger
  • 100 kW DC fast charging
  • Air conditioning
  • 18-inch wheels
  • Reversing camera
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Digital instrument cluster with 10-inch screen
  • Infotainment system with 10.1-inch screen
  • openR Link system with integrated Google services and electric route planner

The next available trim is called Iconic Cinq and adds to the above hands-free parking, frameless interior rear-view mirror, and heated front seats and steering wheel. Both trims can be ordered in Spain from 31 May onwards.

And now we come to the question we raised at the beginning: Is the Renault 5 an electric vehicle for everyone in terms of its price? If we set aside its size and range to focus on its equipment/price ratio, the Renault 5 E-Tech may become an interesting vehicle that aims directly at the waterline of other electric cars such as the Peugeot e-208 or the FIAT 500e.

Its price including VAT, transport and registration tax starts at 32,900 euros for the Techno trim and at 34,900 euros for the Iconic Cinq trim, which drop to 31,584 euros and 33,504 euros respectively after applying the brand’s discounts. At these prices we could still deduct, if we qualify, up to 7,000 euros in aid from the MOVES III Plan and up to 3,000 euros of income tax deduction. The brand also confirms that the version with the 40 kWh battery and 300-kilometre range will arrive in 2025 with a starting price of 24,900 euros before aid.
