The Spanish National Police receives 70 new Toyota Prius+

The Spanish National Police has renewed its patrol vehicle fleet with 70 units of the Toyota Prius+

The Spanish National Police has joined sustainable mobility and has bet on hybrid technology from Toyota to renew part of its fleet. The Spanish National Police Corps has added 70 units of the new Toyota Prius+, which will join its fleet of patrol vehicles known as Z. A few days ago we learned that the Municipal Police received its new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs, which demonstrates the commitment of the different police forces to the most efficient cars.

The 70 new Toyota Prius+ are already operational in several Spanish provinces. Its specific equipment includes a prisoner transport kit and it is fully adapted to meet the needs of the officers who use them as essential work tools.

10 of these units are called iZ patrols, that is, smart cars. They are equipped with the latest communication and image recording technologies, allowing information to be exchanged through the sending and receiving of messages, photographs and videos.

The Toyota Prius+ of the iZ patrol are equipped, in addition to the permanent prisoner kit, with a navigator, an automatic document reading and consultation system, a rear-seat video camera, a fingerprint reader and an OCR licence plate recognition system.

All these new cars feature the corporate livery of the Spanish National Police Corps, light bar and all the equipment necessary so that officers can carry out their work without problems.

With this renewal of the patrol cars, carried out through direct purchase, the Spanish National Police Corps has demonstrated its commitment to clean and sustainable technologies. Undoubtedly, the new mobile units of the officers will help reduce the average emissions of its fleet.

A very popular car in its segment

The Toyota Prius+ was updated in May 2016 and is the seven-seater version of the hybrid car from the Japanese brand. It features a propulsion system made up of a petrol engine and an electric motor that together produce 136 CV.

One of the differences between the versions of this hybrid car, known as the standard Prius and the Prius+ for the larger capacity version, is that the battery of the larger model is made of lithium-ion, while the standard Prius uses nickel-metal hydride, making it the first car from the Japanese manufacturer to use this type of battery.

Another difference between the two variants is that the seven-seater weighs 125 kilos more than the standard one, so Toyota had to modify the transmission design to multiply the power of the engines.

The new vehicles in the Spanish National Police fleet have three operating modes:

  • EV: the car moves solely on the electric motor, so it can travel up to 2 kilometres at a maximum of 70 km/h.
  • ECO: the combustion engine kicks in but tries to minimise consumption as much as possible.
  • POWER: the hybrid system delivers maximum output to achieve all the available power.

With this type of propulsion, the Toyota Prius+ carries the DGT ECO label, so it can enter low-emission zones without problems and benefits from a discount when parking in regulated parking areas.
