The Takata airbag crisis now affects more than 34 million vehicles

Recall campaigns over airbags made by the company Takata, which are installed in cars from the main brands worldwide, have reached 34 million vehicles in the United States, while in Spain several thousand vehicles have also been recalled for inspection

Having an airbag is a guarantee of safety, but knowing that there may be a problem with this important safety component is far from pleasant. So, following the latest news about airbags made by Takata, the main supplier of them, many drivers of cars equipped with them have serious doubts. We already discussed a few days ago how several brands (mainly Asian ones) have contacted owners of these cars to have them inspected, but the figures now emerging are very high.

The fault lies in the container holding the gas that inflates the airbag, which in places with high humidity can fail and not work correctly, turning it into a component that does not fulfil its function. This problem is concentrated in cars manufactured between 2003 and 2008, so those made after this date have already solved it and there is nothing to worry about.

However, in the United States the response has gone beyond the original precautionary measure, and the recall has been extended from the original scope to 34 million units, since cars from states without the humidity that could affect airbag operation have also been included. The problem is not trivial: it has caused 6 deaths so far and affects the main car manufacturers.

Among the brands that have received these airbags are BMW, Fiat-Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota. In Spain several recall notices have also been received, as we discussed in that earlier article. The matter is important, but there is no need to panic. If you receive the notice, you simply need to take the vehicle to the dealership, where the inspection will be carried out free of charge and you will find out whether or not the problem exists.
