The British magazine Autocar has learned from sources at Tesla Motors that the Model 3 will be revealed to the public in March 2016. The event will not be part of the upcoming Geneva Motor Show; instead, the Californian manufacturer will organise an exclusive one that will take place later that same month.

The strategy defined is similar to the one Tesla used to present the Model S. The difference lies in the time gap between its unveiling and its sale. The model currently on sale took more than three years to reach the market, whereas, according to Autocar, the Model 3 will be available in mid-2017, a date that matches what the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, announced a week ago on the corporate blog.

The Tesla Model 3 will compete in the premium corner of the D-segment, up against rivals such as the Audi Audi A4, BMW BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-MercedesBenz C-Class. The company’s aim is to reduce manufacturing costs so that it can sell it at a significantly cheaper price than the Model S. To this end, the car will be built on a new platform cheaper to produce than that of the other model, made entirely of aluminium, a more expensive material, as are many other mechanical components.

In earlier statements, Tesla’s design chief, Franz von Holzhausen, said that its design would be more groundbreaking than that of the Model S. The Model 3 will have a less conventional look and express an aesthetic language that gives more personality to the brand’s upcoming cars.

Sources at Tesla have also said the model is expected to spawn other body styles to amortise the architecture. The Model 3 will arrive just after the Model X SUV, which we will see at the end of this year and which will land in Europe in 2016.
