The Volkswagen Caddy goes electric... with ABT!

The German tuner ABT has just unveiled the electric Volkswagen Caddy, which is already available on the market with a range of 159 kilometres.

The arrival of electrification in the automotive sector is an unstoppable development, as evidenced by the many vehicles that already rely on this type of powertrain. For now, it is the manufacturers themselves who are responsible for either building electric cars from scratch or creating variants of existing models with these powerplants. However, on this occasion ABT has decided to take a 360º turn by creating a 100% electric version of the Volkswagen Caddy, one of the most successful vans from the German brand.

And indeed, this unexpected creation breaks with all the conventions of the German tuner, which has accustomed us to high-performance vehicles accompanied by exuberant styling. This time, however, we find quite the opposite. The Volkswagen Caddy dispenses with any superfluous elements to focus on caring for the environment through a powertrain capable of reducing CO2 emissions to zero.

In terms of design, there is no modification compared with a conventional Caddy except for the front plate, which makes its electric nature and the person responsible for it clear. Otherwise, it is a perfectly ordinary commercial van, where alloy wheels on the sides are the only added attraction, along with a specific instrument panel in the interior.

But it is the mechanical side that truly sparks our interest, since it will allow its users to save considerable amounts of money. To achieve this, the engineers at ABT took a conventional Caddy as the base and carried out this interesting conversion , which features a 37.3 kWh battery and a motor producing 83 kW (approximately 111 CV) and 200 Nm of torque.

With this setup, the German van is capable of covering a total of 159 kilometres on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle. That figure can rise to 167 kilometres if driving is exclusively urban, but when it comes to motorway driving, the top speed can go from 90 km/h to 120.

The 100% electric Volkswagen Caddy is already on sale, and its starting price will be 29,900 euros in the German market. In this way, we are dealing not only with a very interesting vehicle for customers who need generous space for carrying cargo, but also with the one that will mark a new era within ABT, a company that will also end up offering power upgrades for the electric vehicles of the Volkswagen Group.
