This is how the new revolutionary paint of BMW works
The new revolutionary paint of BMW will reach production cars to maximise customisation options.

BMW has developed a new revolutionary paint that changes colour on the go. As confirmed by the Bavarian brand, this technology is very likely to reach production cars. In addition, it has added that this is just one more feature drivers will be able to choose from in order to express “even more of their individuality”.
The BMW iX concept is covered in a special paint called E Ink, which has been specially designed for the SUV’s bodywork. It adapts to all the contours of the surface. This coating then receives a series of electrical signals that manipulate an electrophoretic technology, thus achieving different colour pigments.

The German brand has pointed out that this is a very important feature because, since the dawn of the automotive era, car colours have been a fundamental part of the owner’s personality. The manufacturer has also wanted to add that it already offers a wide colour palette with new shades that will be added annually. The aim is to reflect the changing characteristics of its current customer base.
For the time being, no official launch date has been set for the E Ink technology, but BMW has assured that potential customers will be taken to a completely new level when it comes to specifying a new car from a “unique” brand. It should be noted that this is not only a very attractive technology; the brand has pointed out that the E Ink system is a sustainable option.

Given that white shades reflect light better than dark ones, it is understood that drivers can simply change the car’s colour in warmer conditions to reflect more light and rely less on the climate control system. With darker shades, which are able to absorb more heat, the opposite can be done in colder conditions. In addition, the E Ink technology itself does not need a constant flow of energy to maintain the chosen shade. This innovative wrap is already being applied to devices such as eReaders, but for the one applied to this iX Flow, millions of microcapsules have been used to coat the surface of the finish.
