ID.4 Volkswagen Electric Cars SUV
This is the new Volkswagen ID.4, the brand's latest electric SUV
With a limited edition of 27,000 commemorative launch units, the new Volkswagen ID.4 arrives to join the ID.3 in VW’s electric expansion

In a way, the enthusiasm, the excitement and the uncertainty of scheduling the presentation of a car you already know almost everything about is reduced to confirming its supposed certainties. Something like this has been happening lately in the car industry’s approach, which presents new models like collectible magazine installments at the newsstand, and the case of the new Volkswagen ID.4 is one more example.

At the outset, the manufacturer confirms that this electric crossover from the ID family measures 4.59 m in length, 1.85 m in width, and its height stands at 1.61 m. Just as interesting, or more so, are the 2.77 m wheelbase it shares with its brother, architecturally a twin, the Volkswagen ID.3, which, besides allowing a generous interior space for five occupants, according to its manufacturer’s description and pending a first-hand look, offers a boot with 543 litres of cargo space that increases to 1,575 litres when the rear seatbacks are folded down.

As for its bodywork, little remained to be discovered once the brand had already published digitised sketches of the vehicle. The only remaining point is that its drag coefficient is set at a sensational Cx of 0.28.
Power and range of the new Volkswagen ID.4
An efficiency in cutting through the air, supported by the already familiar powertrain of 150 kW, equivalent to 204 CV of power and 310 Nm of torque maximum. Thanks to the work on aerodynamics and traction, the new Volkswagen ID.4 manages a standing start to 100 km/h in around 8.5 seconds, a respectable figure. As for top speed, it is largely academic, as it is limited to 160 km/h to preserve range. Worth noting, the traction of this car is managed by an electronic locking differential that distributes torque according to the grip detected.

Based on the above, with the 77 kWh energy storage as standard and depending on the use of its various energy-recovery features and technologies, the new Volkswagen ID.4 claims a range of 520 km on a single charge.
Regarding replenishing electrical energy, the battery, built from a modular structure of 12 units with 24 cells, can accept up to 125 kW during fast charging, which would allow 320 km of range after half an hour plugged into a charging point.
Range, sales and price of the new Volkswagen ID.4
As for sales of the new Volkswagen ID.4, the German brand already allows reservations for both the launch edition Volkswagen ID.4 First Edition and the Volkswagen ID.4 First Edition Max.
As happened with the Volkswagen ID.3, the marketing of the new electric SUV will be preceded by a special edition with two trim levels: the more modest Volkswagen ID.4 1ST and the higher-spec Volkswagen ID.4 1ST Max.

In any case, the colours available for the bodywork palette will be metallic and named Glacier White, Honey Yellow, Stonewashed Blue, and Magnese Grey. Additionally, it is possible to add the Style package, which adds black-painted mirrors and roof in contrast with the grey pillars, roof bars and trim.
Once sales of the new Volkswagen ID.4 limited launch editions end, whose deliveries have been announced from early 2021, the new electric crossover range will offer other power levels as well as different energy storage capacities and, consequently, range, along with the option of rear-wheel drive only or all-wheel drive.

For reference, the price of the Volkswagen ID.4 in Germany sits within the expected margins, especially considering the RRP of a special launch edition such as the First Edition, from €49,950, and €59,950 for the 1ST Max.
