The Toyota range is set to expand over the coming months with the addition of a new small SUV model.

We don’t yet know its final name or appearance, but Toyota has kindly released a first sketch as a preview of what we will see at the Geneva Motor Show, provisionally called CH-R.

Currently, the Toyota SUV range is represented exclusively by the ever-present RAV4, one of the forerunners of this type of vehicle, which was introduced 20 years ago. However, it seems this model falls somewhat short when it comes to meeting the needs of more urban users, who see the RAV4 as too large a vehicle.

Some time ago, in 2010, Toyota offered a model in its range called the Urban Cruiser, a vehicle concept with a clear urban focus but with a rugged look and the option of all-wheel drive. However, the product didn’t take off due to its peculiar design, fair interior quality and somewhat high price for its segment.

Although the idea was good, this model was soon withdrawn from the market. Now, Toyota has taken the concept a step further, developing what we currently know as the CH-R. This model will set itself apart from the rest of Toyota’s lineup thanks to a much more youthful design that will attract a wider audience.

This model will have a hybrid variant and will be built on the modular TNGA platform family

This model will be manufactured in Europe, specifically at the Japanese company’s plants in Turkey and Great Britain, which speaks volumes about the brand’s intentions for this small compact SUV, which will be launched to compete confidently with models such as the Nissan Juke, the Renault Captur, and the Peugeot 2008.

Mechanically, the CH-R will have the advantage of offering a hybrid variant, unique in its segment. It will be one of the first models built on the new GA-C platform of the TNGA family, sharing it with none other than the new Prius, which we told you about here.

In addition to the hybrid variant, which will feature many electric components from the Prius and selectable all-wheel drive, the CH-R will also have traditional diesel and petrol powertrains. It will be one of Toyota’s most important models for the coming years, given the need to grow sales in key segments such as the B-segment SUV. We will see its final look at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.
