Volvo Polestar: four cylinders and 450 CV?

The downsizing is a reality that practically everyone in the motoring world accepts as, at the very least, inevitable.
A clear example comes from Polestar, the sports division of Volvo, which is studying focusing on four-cylinder engines for its future creations.
In the past, Polestar earned great recognition thanks to its work in motorsport with Volvo, winning countless victories across multiple disciplines and categories worldwide. However, in recent years the popularity of Polestar declined until it became practically invisible.
It was only two years ago that Volvo decided to revive the brilliance of this tuner, revealing its capabilities with the creation of the S60 Polestar, a model that was initially meant to be just a concept but, due to its magnificent reception by the public, ultimately went into production.
The current V60 and S60 use a variant of the well-known turbocharged 6-cylinder inline engine, better known as the T6. The power of this Polestar variant reaches 350 CV, and although it is a very reliable and durable engine, it seems there will be no more Polestar versions with this powertrain.

Future Polestar models will leave the six-cylinder behind to focus on hybridisation
It seems that the tuner’s next creations will feature different variants of the new turbocharged four-cylinder engine that Volvo previewed a few months ago. It is a highly advanced engine, capable of producing up to 450 CV thanks to various innovations.
Furthermore, the package will very likely be supported by electric motors, with a layout very similar to that of the new T8 fitted to the XC90 and S90/V90. Thanks to this electric assistance, the performance and power figures will be equal to—if not higher than—those of a large combustion engine.
It remains to be seen in which model Polestar’s new mechanical setup will debut, although everything points to the new S90, the XC90, and the future generation of the S60 all receiving variants developed by the Swedish tuner. Either way, can you imagine a hypothetical V40 Polestar with these figures? It would be something to talk about…
