Toyota’s little ones have grown up. This must be the price to pay for becoming the world’s largest car manufacturer. In Spain, it has to inspect 100,000 units within 60 days out of the 106,000 it plans to check in order to comply with the safety regulations regarding the accelerator pedal problem. On top of these, there are more than 1,000 units of the Prius model that will also need to have their ABS controller updated.

At least Toyota is handling this properly. The cost will be zero for customers and dealerships, as the Japanese brand is fully taking responsibility for the error, with an estimated cost in Spain of around 2.5 million euros. Furthermore, the speed with which it is taking charge of the matter is also commendable in this case.

The part to be replaced is being produced at a good pace, 90,000 units per day, 40,000 of which will be destined for Europe, so that by the end of the month more than 70% of the affected vehicles will be repaired. The Japanese brand will send 5,000 letters a day to notify customers and set out the service schedules.

Apart from the public apologies made by the Japanese top executive, Toyota is working hard to recover its image, at least with its consumers, since it is quite true that the media do not place as much emphasis on repairing the damage as on creating it. The press in general usually behaves this way.
