The latest-generation Volkswagen Polo was unveiled with considerable changes and a more attractive look compared to its previous version. Later, the German brand unveiled the most radical version, the Polo GTi. Now it arrives to get stuck into a terrain where it moves like a fish in water, rallying.

Volkswagen has revealed the design of what will be the new racing Polo, named Polo GTi R5. It features a design in which we can see many traits of the production model, but it displays an aggressiveness and sportiness that are beyond the reach of any standard Polo. Very robust wheel arches complete the lines of the new Polo Rally.

Aerodynamics is also an area where the German engineers have focused much of their work. This is reflected in the huge air intakes and the imposing rear wing that dominates the rear of the Polo R5.

This new Polo is intended to replace the already veteran WRC and change category, but surpassing its predecessor will not be an easy task. The Polo R5 has a strong legacy behind it, which it will keep afloat thanks to its impressive performance.

The most aggressive compact from the German brand arrives with a 1.6-litre turbo engine that will deliver 270 CV. This power, combined with its low weight and great composure, will make the Polo a tough rival that is difficult to beat. Production of the vehicle will begin in mid-2018 so it can hit the road as soon as possible.

The Polo R5 was developed by François-Xavier Demaison -who led this project- together with engineer Gerard-Jan de Jongh. Together they have collaborated for years to bring to life the most radical Polo created to date.

“Before the first race next year, we will put the Polo GTI R5 through rigorous testing to ensure it is ready for the extremely varied track conditions around the world.” Sven Smeets, director of Volkswagen Motorsport, confirmed.

The Polo GTi R5 arrives to dominate the track and become king of its category. We still have to wait a while to see it on track, but the wait will be worth it and, in the meantime, the German brand will whet our appetite with the production GTi and we’ll keep an eye out in case Volkswagen has something even better in mind.
