Volkswagen unveils the first sketches of the new Tiguan

The next generation Volkswagen Tiguan is ready, and its official debut will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2015, which is about to open its doors. Strongly influenced by the Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE, the upcoming Tiguan gains robustness over the current generation. It loses its softer, rounder lines to move closer to a design resembling that of the Volkswagen Touareg, the German brand’s larger sibling, while also losing many of the chrome details on the front.
A three-slat rectangular grille allows the headlights to be joined together, creating an ensemble centred on the manufacturer’s logo. The bumper has an aerodynamic and aggressive design thanks to the lower protections. Larger overhangs, a high waistline and bigger wheel arches make up the side profile of these preliminary sketches of the new Tiguan. It also keeps the longitudinal roof bars, leading to a rear end that gains presence and complexity, thanks to a defined spoiler and a diffuser housing two integrated exhaust outlets. The entire lower part of the bodywork is covered by protections suitable for off-road tracks and rocky terrain.

Although this only appears in the first sketches of the Volkswagen Tiguan 2016, they already represent with great accuracy the final design of Volkswagen’s mid-size SUV. For now it is known that it will be based on the MQB platform and will be slightly longer than its predecessor, as well as 80 kilograms lighter. Reports suggest there will be a Tiguan XL and a coupé-bodied version. The first will be aimed at the Chinese and North American markets and will be based on the Passat and the Touran, while the second will be a worthy rival for the BMW X1 and the Range Rover Evoque, with a more powerful R version that could reach around 300 CV.
As for the engines of the new Volkswagen Tiguan, the entry-level option will be a 1.4-litre TSI unit with 125 CV, while the top option (for now) will be a powerful 2.0-litre TDI engine with 240 CV inherited from the Passat, as well as a plug-in hybrid that is also expected to appear in the future. More details will be revealed this week at its presentation in Frankfurt.
