Volvo also updates the name of the XC40 Recharge in North America and adds some improvements

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is now called EX40 and comes with a higher-capacity battery pack that increases its range. But best of all, it is also slightly cheaper.

The Swedish carmaker, now under the control of Chinese giant Geely, has finally decided to update its electric vehicle lineup in the North American market ahead of this new year. Thus, just as already happened in Europe, the XC40 Recharge will be renamed within the manufacturer’s range as EX40, dropping the “Recharge” badge and following the same nomenclature already used by the EX30 and EX90.

For its part, the XC40’s coupé sibling, the C40 Recharge, will also have its name changed to EC40, although this will happen in 2026 with the launch of a new generation of the model. Until that day arrives, Volvo has announced that the EC40 will no longer be produced.

The Swedish manufacturer hopes that the much clearer distinction between its electric models, hybrids -which will keep the XC40 name- and plug-in hybrids -which will add the T8 badge-, will help consumers differentiate between the mobility options available in the brand’s lineup. These changes to the names of Volvo’s electric models had already been implemented in Europe last year, and now they finally arrive in the United States, ending the confusion caused by using two different naming systems in both markets.

Now you’ll go a little further

Beyond the name, the 2025 EX40 also incorporates some improvements, most notably its new higher-capacity battery pack. In the dual-electric-motor “Twin Motor” version, this rises from 78 kWh to 82 kWh, while the entry-level single-motor version keeps the same 67 kWh battery pack it already had. Additionally, all versions see a slight increase in the maximum power supported during DC fast charging, rising from 200 to 205 kW.

Regarding range, the 2025 EX40 Single Motor achieves an EPA rating of 296 miles -476 km- on a full charge, an increase of just 3 miles -5 km- over the 2024 XC40 Recharge. On the other hand, the dual-motor version increases its range to 260 miles -418 km-, 6 miles -10 km- more than the previous model. Curiously, although Volvo has announced that the EC40 would not be produced this year for the North American market, the EPA still lists 2025 versions with estimated ranges of 298 miles -480 km- for the entry-level single-motor version and 268 miles -431 km- for the dual-motor “Twin Motor” version.

In the United States, the price of the 2025 EX40 with a single electric motor starts at $52,500, plus transportation costs. Likewise, if the dual-electric-motor version is chosen, the price to pay rises to $60,750. This means both versions of the EX40 are now slightly cheaper, with a discount of just over a thousand dollars in each case.
