We are already seeing how different brands are positioning themselves in relation to the new zero-emissions mobility trend. Electric cars look set to be the winners in the tough battle that has been waged over the last few years, and the major brands are preparing launches of cars that could popularise 100% electric drive. In this case, Volvo has entered the fray, announcing its first electric model for 2019.

This is important news, since practically all manufacturers will have one or more 100% electric models on the market within a few years. The fight will then shift to persuading us to choose one of these cars over those with conventional propulsion, and to choose a preferred brand among them. Everyone will work to make their models the chosen ones, so research and development of new technologies will be the norm over the coming years.

Those in charge at Volvo have said they are working on a new platform that will serve as the basis for these electric and hybrid vehicles. It will be called Modular Electrification Platform (MEP), and it is set to replace the current Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) and Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platforms, which were originally going to be used for this type of vehicle from the brand.

This platform will be able to accommodate batteries of up to 100 kWh, the same capacity used, for example, in the Tesla Model S. This news reveals the Swedish brand’s intentions regarding the type of electric vehicles it wants to offer its buyers. What is not yet clear is whether that first electric vehicle will be a version of an existing model or a completely new car, designed from scratch and launched as an innovative vehicle with no combustion-engine version. If all goes well, we will have news about this model very soon.
