Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled all the details of the “heart” of the AMG GT, the successor to the already legendary SLS AMG.
We already knew that AMG is preparing a new generation of turbocharged engines, of which this one is part, replacing the naturally aspirated 6.2 V8.
The new AMG GT engine, whose internal code is M178, will be a completely redesigned unit. It only shares with its predecessors the number of cylinders (8) and their layout (V at 90º). Everything else is brand new.
Displacement drops to 4 liters, but initially the power output will be 503 CV. Peak torque is rated at 650 NM. These impressive figures are achieved thanks to various technologies such as direct injection and twin turbocharging.

The turbochargers are built by the specialist Borg Warner, producing a boost pressure that can reach around 2.3 bar. They will work alongside a high-performance intercooler to always guarantee maximum performance. Interestingly, the two turbines are not located between the two cylinder banks as is usual, but have been placed on the upper part, making this one of the most compact V8 engines.
This engine, which will serve a wide range of AMG models, is basically the combination of two two-liter, four-cylinder blocks. In other words, simply put, we would be talking about two A45 AMG engines joined together to create this new M178.

The V8 is expected to extract the maximum energy from every drop of fuel thanks to a new direct injection system developed by Bosch, which features piezoelectric injectors capable of injecting petrol into the cylinders up to 7 times per cycle, cylinders that are coated with Nanoslide, a technology that reduces friction and improves the engine’s performance.
This new engine will first be fitted to the AMG GT, and later to other models such as the C63 AMG, where we will see it in the not-too-distant future.
