The update to the Audi A3 range brings us more surprises, besides the crossover-bodied variant, the new A3 allstreet. And I am referring to the sporty S3 version. Not because we didn’t expect it, but because, unlike the A3, the S3 arrives with novelties that go beyond the exterior and interior cosmetic changes, and that promise more excitement and driving fun. Let’s take a look at them.

Engine and transmission: the most powerful S3 in history

To begin with, the 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engine is the most powerful ever fitted to an S3, increasing output by 23 CV to reach 333 CV (245 kW), and maximum torque by another 20 Nm to 420 Nm. Looking back, the S3 now delivers almost the same power as the 2010 RS 3 with its 2.5 five-cylinder engine; at that time the S3 “made do” with 265 CV. With this increase in power, the new S3 clocks 4.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, while the top speed remains limited to 250 km/h. The improvement goes beyond the figures: maximum torque is available across a very broad band, between 2,100 and 5,500 rpm. The turbocharger remains pre-charged when cruising at constant speed and under partial load to improve response when accelerating. And the 7-speed S tronic gearbox improves its ability to transmit torque and has reduced shift times at full load.

However, one of the most notable novelties, and the one that will be most noticed behind the wheel of the S3 when driving sportily, is the introduction of the torque splitter until now reserved for the RS 3. This variable and active torque distribution system between the rear wheels, depending on the driving situation and the drive select programme chosen, improves dynamic behaviour, and it is combined with a new “dynamic plus” programme in which the torque splitter sends as much engine torque as possible to the rear axle and to the outside wheel in the bend, creating a tendency to oversteer that is synonymous with strong emotions behind the wheel. Audi has also adjusted the way the engine delivers power in this sport mode, as well as the transmission.

These are not the only changes aimed at providing greater dynamism. The new S3 receives modifications to the suspension, with new more rigid wishbones with bearings and a running gear with a specific set-up adapted to the operation of the torque splitter. New high-performance tyres also arrive – the standard wheels on the Spanish market are 19 inches, with 235/35 tyres – and the diameter of the front brake discs is increased, reaching 357 mm and growing 4 mm thicker.

New design, more equipment

As with the rest of the A3 range, the S3 also receives an exterior redesign, which in this case affects the frameless Singleframe grille and even more prominent air intakes. The bumpers and light units are also new. The rear diffuser, split into two sections, is flanked by twin exhaust outlets; optionally, a high-performance exhaust with titanium silencer can be fitted. The new colour palette includes three new shades: Distrito Green, Ascari Blue and Progressive Red. Of course, the S3 also gains the option of choosing between four daytime running light signatures from the MMI. Overall, although its look remains “discreet”, Audi has indeed given the new S3 more character, with styling details reminiscent of the RS 3 and a more aggressive appearance.

In the interior, the redesigned centre console with a new gear lever stands out, along with the contrast stitching with double topstitching, the new ambient light plus package and all the specific details that distinguish the S models: a flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, new illuminated fabric panel on the door panels, S badges, decorative inserts in brushed aluminium or carbon fibre… Not to forget the online store options, which allow third-party apps to be downloaded and used directly on the vehicle’s multimedia system; or Audi’s functions on demand programme, for adding extra equipment via the myAudi app even after the car has been purchased.

The Audi S3, available in Sportback and Sedan versions, has a starting price for the Spanish market of 65,260 euros.
