From being the first Spanish compact to win the WTCC to conquering the Nürburgring with a front-wheel-drive lap record, the SEAT León celebrates 25 years of history

The SEAT León celebrates its 25th anniversary as one of the most iconic compacts in automotive history. Since its debut in 1999, it has stood out for its bold design, sporty performance and advanced technology, marking milestones in the industry. Across four generations, this model has proven to be much more than a car, becoming a commercial success and outselling the Ibiza, and undergoing constant evolution that has, without a doubt, won over the hearts of Spanish consumers.

First Generation (1999-2006)

The SEAT León debuted as a compact model with a sporty soul, designed by the renowned Giorgetto Giugiaro. Based on the platform of the second-generation SEAT Toledo, its robust design and dynamic lines broke with the monotony of the segment. It was manufactured in Martorell and quickly became a bestseller thanks to its innovative proposition.

  • Revolutionary engines: The first generation was a milestone as the first Spanish-built car to offer a 180 CV version with four-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox. In 2001, the 1.9 TDI 150 CV diesel engine became a phenomenon, accumulating thousands of orders in record time. Petrol variants, such as the powerful 2.8 VR6 of 204 CV, stood out for their sporty character.
  • Top of the range: The León CUPRA R, launched in 2004, reached 225 CV with the 1.8 T 20V engine, positioning it as one of the most powerful compacts of its era.

This model not only earned praise for its performance, but also positioned SEAT as a brand capable of competing with European giants in the sporty compact segment.

Second Generation (2006-2012)

Walter de Silva redesigned the second generation with an aerodynamic and streamlined approach, maintaining the sporty character that had defined the León. This model introduced design features such as hidden rear door handles, which gave it a touch of coupé styling, and door-mounted mirrors, improving its aerodynamics.

  • Technological innovations: This generation adopted the Group platform Volkswagen with independent rear suspension, electromechanical power steering and direct-injection engines in both petrol and diesel. The arrival of the common rail system in the TDI engines offered greater smoothness and efficiency.
  • Competition: The León won the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in 2008 and 2009, becoming the first diesel car to win this title. Drivers such as Yvan Müller and Gabriele Tarquini took the León to the podium, consolidating it as a SEAT emblem in motorsport.
  • Sporty versions: The FR and CUPRA models offered exceptional performance, with the CUPRA R reaching 265 CV, an impressive figure for the time.

Third Generation (2012-2020)

With Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos in charge of design, the SEAT León made a qualitative leap. This generation was distinguished by its stylistic maturity, more refined lines and a focus on technology and connectivity.

  • Variety of bodystyles: For the first time, the León was offered in three variants: five-door, three-door (SC) and estate (ST). This diversity allowed the model to reach a wider audience.
  • Technology: It was a pioneer in incorporating Full LED lighting, advanced infotainment systems and safety assistants. These innovations reinforced its position as one of the most cutting-edge models on the market.
  • Commercial success: In 2014, it outsold the SEAT Ibiza in sales, becoming the brand’s best-selling model. It also stood out for its performance, with the León CUPRA achieving the Nürburgring lap record for front-wheel-drive cars, with a time of 7:58 minutes.

Fourth Generation (2020-present)

The current León generation represents the pinnacle of SEAT’s innovation and adaptability. It is the brand’s first 100% connected model, with real-time data access and an advanced digital interface.

  • Design: The sharp front end and the rearward-set A-pillar give it a dynamic and elegant image. Furthermore, the improved proportions increased interior space, reaching a 620-litre boot in the estate version.
  • Mechanical options: It offers a complete range with C, ECO and Zero emission labels, including e-HYBRID plug-in hybrid versions with up to 60 km of electric range.
  • Safety advances: The driver assistance systems and cloud connectivity place the León among the leaders in safety and comfort technology.
