Audi wants to bring back the A4 and forget about the A5 renaming

Audi switched its naming system to a split between electric models and combustion-engine models, but now wants to return to its roots.

About two years ago, Audi made a decision regarding the names of its models. Under this new naming approach, it decided that odd numbers would refer to cars with petrol and diesel engines, while even numbers would refer to electric models. Thus, the traditionally powered Audi A4 became the Audi A5, and the name A4 was reserved for a variant with an electric motor.

However, this move caused some confusion among enthusiasts, since the A5 name was reserved for models with coupé bodywork and Sportback, so the arrival of saloon and estate bodies caused some discomfort. And not only among buyers, but also among dealers.

Now, the German brand wants to reverse this change and bring back 4 combustion engines to the Audi, restoring this model to its original essence. This emerges from an interview that the CEO of Audi, Gernot Döllner, gave to the Australian outlet Drive during the Munich Show. According to his words, the classic naming used by the brand will return,

Thus, models marked with the letter A will be flat-floor vehicles and those marked with the Q will be SUVs. The number that follows the letter will indicate the size or segment of the car. With this measure, which reverses the one approved by his predecessor in the role, it will be possible to see how the current A5 becomes an A4 again.

That said, we will have to wait until the next mid-cycle update of the model, which is scheduled for sometime in the next two years. Within the A4 name we could also have an electric version, the Audi A4 e-tron, which would share a segment with its combustion siblings. This would not arrive until 2028 and would be based on the new Scalable Systems Platform and adopt design elements from the Concept C prototype.
