BMW begins pre-series production of the iX3 in China

The Bavarian manufacturer has just announced that pre-series production of the brand’s first model based on the Neue Klasse has begun at its Chinese plant in Shenyang. This is an essential first step toward meeting the company’s goal of starting series production of the iX3 SUV at this plant this same year, in order to meet demand in the Chinese market.

According to recent reports published in Chinese media, the first pre-series units of this electric SUV were assembled at the plant just days before the end of 2025.

The joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) will produce not only the vehicles but also sixth-generation battery packs with high-density cylindrical cells. For this project, an investment of around 10,000 million yuan is planned, which amounts to roughly 1,300 million euros at the current exchange rate, aimed at modernizing the facilities and integrating advanced technologies.

BMW will adapt the production of the Neue Klasse in China to the particularities of this market

It is worth noting that in China, BMW works closely with important local partners such as CATL, the world’s leading battery cell supplier, and Alibaba for the development of artificial intelligence solutions. These alliances reinforce the innovation strategy of the Bavarian manufacturer adapted to the Chinese market. On the other hand, BMW has not neglected sustainability either; for example, the Shenyang plant operates on 100% renewable energy and geothermal systems to reduce emissions.

In China, BMW will sell an exclusive variant of the iX3 with a longer wheelbase, to adapt to the specific demand of this market. This model will offer more interior space, especially in the rear seats, where passengers will be able to travel with greater comfort.

Although, as we already told you here on HighMotor, series production of the Neue Klasse started in Europe in 2025 at the new BMW plant located in the Hungarian town of Debrecen, the Chinese model will not reach its local market until well into 2026, possibly by next summer.
