Norway closes 2025 with a battery electric vehicle market share of 96 percent

2025 has been the year in which the electric vehicle stopped being an alternative in the Norwegian market and became the dominant choice.

Norway consolidates its position as a global leader in electric mobility in 2025 with record figures. 95.9 percent of the new passenger cars registered last year were pure battery electric vehicles, a notable increase from the 88.9 percent recorded in 2024. According to data from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (OFV), 179,550 new passenger cars were registered, the highest figure since 2021, of which 172,233 were pure battery electric vehicles.

In statements to the media, the agency wanted to highlight that 2025 has been an exceptional year resulting from a sustained policy of incentives for electric vehicles. The strong late-year rebound, especially in November and December, with registrations in the latter month up 158 percent, is largely explained by many buyers rushing ahead of the introduction of VAT on electric vehicles from 1 January 2026. A subject, the latter, on which we already spoke in a recent post.

Beyond the registration data, another historic milestone to note is that in 2025 the fleet of electric passenger cars surpassed diesel for the first time. Although nearly two-thirds of the vehicles on the road still run on fossil fuels, diesel and petrol engines are on track to become marginal products, with only 1 percent of new vehicle registrations corresponding to diesel models and 0.3 percent to petrol ones.

These are the favourite brands of Norwegians

Analysing the market by brand, Tesla dominated the market with authority. The American brand achieved 34,285 registrations, which represents a market share of 19.1 percent and almost one in every five new vehicles. The Model Y set an absolute record with 27,621 registrations, the highest figure ever recorded for a single model in one year in Norway. For its part, the Tesla Model 3 ranked fifth among the best-selling models.

Volkswagen also closed the year strongly in the Norwegian market, placing second as a brand with 23,938 units and a 13.3 percent share. On the other hand, Chinese manufacturers also gained ground, jointly reaching 13.7 percent of new registrations, compared with 10.4 percent in 2024.
